Protecting our oceans
All Saltee products are ocean friendly.
From our first formulation project; Saltee SPF products have been science-led in identifying and avoiding anything that might be considered harmful to ocean life.
In our formulations we pair ingredients that act as stabilisers to prevent them from breaking down in the sun to ensure that our UV filters remain effective in providing sun protection while avoiding adding anything toxic that may harm our natural world.
No oxybenzone
Oxybenzone has been identified as an ingredient in some SPF that may harm coral reefs. The research has found that that oxybenzone may accelerate coral bleaching and it is also impacting the development of aquatic organisms such as fish.
For the reason highlighted above, no Saltee products contain Oxybenzone and none of our products ever will.
No nano particles
Research shows that zinc and titanium oxide nano particles can be consumed or absorbed by marine life and disrupt the growth of coral reefs. Nanoparticles are also potentially damaging to humans – including those of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide found in mineral sunscreens – as they may enter the bloodstream and cause allergic reactions.
Nano-sized zinc oxide may have a harmful impact on fish and coral reefs, causing coral bleaching at high concentrations, mainly due its ability to be soluble, separating into the more toxic zinc ions when exposed to UV. The Saltee SPF range does not contain zinc oxide.
There is no use of zinc oxide or nanoparticles within any of our SPF formulas
Saltee is a business based on sustainable principles – we don’t shout about it because we see good sustainable practice as a given in any modern consumer goods business. The genesis for establishing a natural and positive consumer business came from a recycling business that our Founders established in 2011. Bringing our experience in consumer goods, retail and complex supply chains - the commitment of Saltee is to be a fabulous product but also one that has a positive impact on the wider world.
Saltee will continue research on the impact SPF has on our oceans. We make sure that we review our formulations every year to reflect any updated findings and our ongoing commitment to being “ocean friendly” underpins these commitments.
