In the coastal hamlet of Acciaroli, Southern Italy, villagers enjoy the good life – and they enjoy it for a while longer than the rest of us. 1 in 10 residents live healthily to over 100 years old.
It’s not because the villagers are especially health-conscious. Connoisseurs of food and drink, their zest for life’s pleasures is as famous as their longevity.
The story of Acciaroli was reported in the media and it caught the interest of David and Bonita Spencer-Percival, our founders. Scientists believed that the key differentiator that sets Acciaroli apart from other Mediterranean villages is the amount of rosemary that the residents consume in their diet. David and Bonita were keen to incorporate rosemary into their diet but there was, however, one problem: they didn’t really want to eat it and there were no rosemary drinks available on the market. So, they decided to create their own.
It would have been easy to create a flavoured water or an essence (which is a chemically manufactured flavouring) but it was important to our founders to create a fresh rosemary extract which not only contained the beautiful flavours but also the active compounds found in the rosemary plant, in order to mirror what the Acciarolians were consuming.
It was then we approached Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London and formed a collaboration. Following discussions with their head botanical scientist, Professor Monique Simmons, O.B.E., we identified further ‘superherbs’: Juniper, Basil, Fennel, Lemon Verbena, Ginger and Mint. We created pure, single herbal extracts of each of these herbs and received authentication by the scientists at Kew.
And so, our No1 Botanicals range was born. Containing nothing but pure herbal extract and certified natural spring water, our drinks are free from sugars, sweeteners and preservatives, certified as vegan friendly and all our packaging is recyclable.
