Staycation planning, the Saltee way
We may not be able to travel just yet but there’s no harm in pre-planning a getaway a little closer to home. Saltee loves a staycation just as much as travelling long haul. Discover some of the UK’s hidden gems that we’ve added to our summer 2020 list.
Porthcurno, Cornwall
A local award-winning paradise that’s dusted with soft white sand and turquoise waters that will give the Greek Islands a run for their money. An absolute oasis of natural beauty that is family friendly. With an abundance of coastal walks including Porthgwarra and Land’s End then eastwards to Logan Rock. Beyond the headland is Penberth Cove, a beautiful unspoilt fishing cove which belongs to the National Trust where boats can be seen on a granite slipway in front of the old horse drawn windlass.
Sandwood Bay, Scotland
Arguably, one of the most beautiful beaches in Britain, the wild and spectacular Sandwood Bay in Kinlochbervie is backed by huge sand dunes and an impressive loch that faces into the North Atlantic. The beach boasts stunning pink sand which is surrounded by cliffs. Here you can admire the sea stack of Am Buachaille, while behind the bay’s large dunes stretches freshwater loch, Sandwood. One of the most unspoilt beaches within the UK and definitely on the Saltee summer destination list.
Porthcothan, Padstow, Cornwall
One of North Cornwall’s scenic treasures. A rugged Cornish cove with unique rock formations, caves and rock pools perfect for exploring. An absolute must for swimming and watersports during high tide and it’s a fantastic spot to while away a day enjoying the sounds of the lapping waves.
Aldeburgh Beach, Suffolk
Aldeburgh has plenty to explore on and around the beach. Including quirky beachfront buildings. Plus, plenty of cultural heritage to discover as well. The art scene remains vibrant in Aldeburgh with a number of galleries, most notably Caroline Wiseman’s housed in the South Lookout right on the beach. Don’t forget to treat yourself to the culinary cuisine, fish and chips, notably the best on the east coast.
The Strand Portstewart Beach, County Londonderry
This award-winning beach, owned and managed by the National Trust, is one of Northern Ireland’s finest. With two beautiful miles of golden sand backed by impressive dunes. Take the whole family and drive right up to the beach for a picnic in the sun. Surfing, walking, horse-riding and bird watching are just some of the activities on offer here. We can almost feel the sea breeze already!
